Rose and the Doctor find a ship rushing towards Earth and attempt to catch it, though it gets ahead of them and lands in the World War II era.
Once they TARDIS materializes they begin searching for the ship. Though Rose and the Doctor become separated when Rose hears and sees a child on the top of a building.
Rose becomes curious and concerned for the child, and goes after him, while the Doctor heads into a bar to ask if anyone had recently seen anything fall from the sky recently, not realizing that posters where all over, turning his
question into more of a joke.
In the meantime Rose climbs up ladders on the side the building to get to the child, when she is at a level below the child she grabs a rob dangling in front of her and starts climbing it. Only she finds she is starting to fly away from
the building, as the rope is attached to a blimp.
Rose begins shouting for the Doctor to help, only the Doctor is just exiting the bar quite a distance below. He begins looking for Rose, not having heard, he then hears the child, the same one Rose had tried to get closer to earlier, over the fake police phone asking for his mother.
As the Doctor attempts to use his sonic screwdriver on the phone to find out how its working. A girl in her early twenties approaches the Doctor and warns him not to answer the phone.
Confused as to who she is, and what is meant by her warning, he questions her, just as she takes off he picks up the receiver and questions who is at the other end. He then hangs up the receiver and follows the girl.
In the meantime Rose is hanging onto the Rope yelling for help, in the distance a man sees Rose through advanced binoculars made in the future, that allow him to see that she has a cell phone on her and that like him she isn't from this time. The man, who has the appearance of a Captain, leaves and returns to his ship to help Rose.
When Rose hears him she doesn't know what to think, though does as instructed, a few moments later Rose is safely aboard the Captains spaceship. She thanks the Captain and then faints.
While this is taking place the Doctor finds and follows the young girl to a hideout, where he attempts to get more information about what is happening.
When she leaves he follows her where he meets other young kids sitting down in someone's house to eat their dinner. The girl tells the Doctor a little more about what has been happening, until they hear the child on the outside asking if anyone in the house is his mother.
When the kids sitting at the table her this they become afraid, and the girl tells them all to leave out the back.
Still confused, The Doctor asks what is wrong, and receives another caution from the girl. The Doctor goes to the front door and sees the Childs hand sticking through the mail slot. The girl comes up from behind him and warns him not to touch the hand nor open the door. Or else become like the child, empty, after a few moments the Doctor tells the child he will open the door. The child takes his hand out and when the Doctor does open the door the child isn't any where to be seen.
As Rose becomes conscious again she talks to the Captain, learning his name is Captain Jack. He puts on music and they go onto the top of his ship to look over the City, Captain Jack tells her about the vessel Rose and the Doctor had been looking for.
After they talk a little more, Rose tells him that The Doctor is the one to be talking to. Captain Jack then uses his tech to find the Doctor, while at the same time The Doctor is making his way into the hospital where the girl told him he would find a doctor to better explain what is happening.
Once inside the Doctor looks around and finds a room where all the people are laying in beds wearing gas masks, just as the empty child had. As the Doctor is looking around at the people, the hospital doctor walks in the room, and gives the same warning the girl had earlier. The hospital doctor explains what had been going on.
Though the hospital doctor begins coughing and suddenly his face turns into a gas mask and he slumps over as if having passed out. The Doctor leaves the room in shock and runs into Rose and Captain Jack on the corridor. Rose tells the Doctor what had been happening and what Captain Jack had told her.
They re-enter the room the Doctor had just left, and the Doctor attempts to make the Captain realize that what happened was due to his vessel.
At the same time the girl goes back to the house to pick up food where she and the other kids had recently been eating. As she grabs food she suddenly hears the empty child, she hides under the table though ends up dropping fruit which the child hears and stops.
She gets out from under the table, and as the child sees her he starts toward her. At the same time all the people in the hospital room start getting up and start towards the Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack, asking them if they're their mother. The girl in a similar situation at the house with the child only feet from her.
