Shortly after being shot in the face and left for dead in the middle of the desert, Lieutenant Michael Long is rescued by ailing Millionaire tycoon; Milton Knight. Mr. Knight rushes the fading Lieutenant by helicopter to his estate, where the tycoon’s medical staff rushes against the clock to save Michael’s face and ultimately his life.
After Michael regains consciousness, he begins to notice suspicious activity near his quarters. Later on he decides too investigate, and is introduced to the Knight Industries Two Thousand. Devin Miles then takes Michael for a quick test run with KITT, they return to the estate moments before the tycoon passes away, passing his legacy to Michael.
Distraught by the loss and unable to be convinced by Devin to stay, Michael receives his new identity as Michael Knight. He then leaves for Silicon Valley, where he meets Maggie; a server at a local bar called the “The Rising Sun”. After gaining Maggie’s trust, she tells Michael about Tonya Walker (the person responsible for shooting him) and the changes that had occurred since she took control.
With Maggie’s information, Michael decides to enter KITT in a Demolition Derby to spark Tonya’s interest, though after his victory, he goes to met Tonya at The Rising Sun as she requested. Only, instead of Tonya, he finds himself up against a gang of angry Demolition Derby drivers. Just as the fighting breaks out, the police arrive arresting the drivers and Michael, Michael then finds himself in a sheriffs jail cell, while KITT has been hoisted up in a garage at Comtron for Tonya Walker. Once free, KITT breaks out of Comtron and breaks into the jail cell holding Michael.
Michael and KITT quickly head back to Comtron to investigate Tonya, at which time she discovers Michael true identity. After a failing to bribe Michael, a security guard interrupts them and in the chaos caused by the guard’s surprise, Tonya escapes just as Michael’s shot. Though severely wounded, he manages to disable the guard and uses the uniform to disguise his escape. Having learned Tonya’s using a jet to escape, Michael and KITT take off to the airport in hot pursuit. As they arrive, they see Tonya and her accomplices boarding a small jet. Desperate to ground the now moving jet, Michael forces KITT to ram it, destroying the wing.
Lacking a backup escape route, Tonya sees Michael as he and KITT park a few yards from the damaged jet. In a fit of rage, she walks up to KITT and shoots Michael through the side window. Due to the bulletproof window, the bullet ricochets back, fatally wounding Tonya. With the threat over, Michael gives control to KITT, who takes him to a nearby hospital for his own wound.
